What is the roadmap?
The roadmap adds a high-level structure that organizes all projects in a workspace under milestones. All members of a workspace can view the roadmap, which means your company's vision and direction is accessible to everyone at all times. The roadmap also gives meaningful context to daily project work which can help motivate the team members doing it. We share more on the theory behind creating roadmaps in the Linear Method.
Enable roadmap
Go to workspace settings to turn on roadmap for your workspace. Once you do, the roadmap icon will appear in the sidebar under Views and milestones will appear on all team project pages.
Create milestones
We pre-populate the roadmap with quarterly milestones which you can edit and reorder at any time from the roadmap sidebar or workspace settings. The same milestones that show up in the roadmap will show up on every team's project page. Updating or reordering milestones on the roadmap will update the milestone order and details on all team project pages.
How we work at Linear
We work in quarterly milestones with dedicated themes. For example, in Q4 2020 our focus was to improve the core app experience. We leave room in the roadmap for unexpected work, issues in the backlog and bugs. We review our roadmap and progress toward projects at our weekly meeting. We share more about how we work here.
Organize projects under milestones
When you enable roadmap, by default all projects will be listed under Upcoming at the bottom of the roadmap. Move existing projects under the milestones they support by manually dragging and dropping them in place. You can do this from the roadmap or a team's project page. Any changes made to projects on the roadmap will be updated on the team project page and vice versa.
Creating and updating projects
Create new projects directly in the roadmap with the add project button. It'll open up a project editor where you can set the project name, description, custom icon, status, target date, project lead and milestone. Don't forget to add a custom icon β we have over 50 options that can be customized to any hex color.
Update projects on the roadmap using the clickable icons (e.g. assignee icon), right-clicking to bring up the contextual menu or by clicking on the more menu (three dots). Click into a project or it's graph to view the project issues and project completion graph. Read more about projects in Projects.
Recently completed projects will show up under Active depending on your view options settings. Update the view options in roadmap or project views to your preference.
